RT by @SpaethFlies: Emirates' SVP of connectivity just said the entire legacy inflight wifi industry "didn't really understand the core technologies" needed to deliver working internet on a plane.
That's a $1.6 billion industry. Gogo, Viasat, Panasonic Avionics, Intelsat, Thales. All selling airlines connectivity for two decades. And one of the world's most premium airlines is now saying it never actually worked.
The physics explain why. Legacy providers used geostationary satellites orbiting at 22,000 miles. Starlink's constellation sits at 340 miles. That distance gap alone changes latency from 600+ milliseconds to under 50. But the real unlock was satellite-to-satellite laser links. Over oceans, legacy systems had nowhere to ground the traffic. The connection just died. Starlink passes data between satellites using lasers until it reaches one over a ground station. They solved a routing problem the industry had accepted as unsolvable.
Emirates is now installing three antennas per A380. Industry first. Two per 777. Because when 500 passengers all try to stream simultaneously in a metal tube at 35,000 feet, one antenna can't handle the bandwidth. Legacy providers never even attempted this.
Here's the stat that tells you everything about suppressed demand. During a recent weather diversion, Emirates had a 25-minute repositioning flight. Nearly 100% of passengers connected and consumed more data over Starlink than passengers typically use on a 7-hour flight with legacy wifi. The demand was always there. The technology was the bottleneck.
Emirates is making it free. All passengers, all cabins, one click. Part of a $5 billion fleet retrofit. 14 aircraft per month. 232 planes done by mid-2027. Qatar Airways saw the announcement and immediately accelerated their own Starlink rollout.
The legacy inflight connectivity providers are watching their entire business get replaced by a company that didn't exist in their industry three years ago.

RT by @SpaethFlies: How big it was? The Brabazon, seen here on its first flight in ´49, was roughly the size of a 767, but carrying only 100 pax in a spacious interior (about the interior of a small car). A bean counter's nightmare and one of the reasons it was axed.
